“I just didn’t fit”; former Celtic winger Lewis Morgan, now thriving at David Beckham’s Inter Miami

It really was a shame how Lewis Morgan struggled at Celtic.

When he broke through at St Mirren, he looked a star in the making. Happy to take players on, with excellent end-product, Morgan was an impressive signing by Celtic. When the Bhoys signed him, he’d scored 13 league goals for the Buddies in the Scottish Championship, from the wing [BBC].

For all intents and purposes, £300,000 looked like shrewd business. A home-grown talent with bags of potential, it appeared to be a good signing. Unfortunately, it just didn’t work out.

Now shining in the MLS for David Beckham’s Inter Miami, Morgan spoke to The Athletic about his time at Celtic. The former St Mirren and Celtic winger said:

“I just think, for whatever reason, my time there didn’t really fit.

“I had a number of injuries and when I got back, the team was doing well and it was hard to get back in. It was just unfortunate.

“I don’t have any regrets about it. I’m here now and delighted to be here, and maybe if things hadn’t happened the way they did, I wouldn’t be loving everything at this club.”

Lewis Morgan: from Celtic to Miami

Not that he’s got much time to contemplate his past. In last year’s edition of the MLS, Morgan was outstanding. In 20 appearances, he scored 5 and set up 5, earning plaudits around the league [Transfermarkt]. Now under the watchful eye of former England Women’s Manager Phil Neville, Morgan is aiming high with his newest club.

At Celtic, Morgan feels, supporters didn’t get to see him at his best. He was often played out of position, or forced up front when injuries blighted the first-team.

Morgan said [The Athletic]:

“At Celtic, you maybe don’t get the chance to have two or three off-games to find your feet because there’s a winning culture there: and rightly so, I should say. I’m not slighting the club at all.

“It’s not something I look back on with regret. I will always be grateful towards Celtic for giving me a chance and although I wished I got the chance to show the fans what I was really about… maybe if I’d been able to play in my most comfortable position.

“When I was playing up front for Celtic, it wasn’t something I was angry about. I was happy to be out there but I probably didn’t get the chance to show my best self. There’s no point complaining about it. I’m happy where I am and Miami have given me an amazing opportunity.”
