Ange Postecoglou has talked up his excitement as Celtic confirmed their participation in mini tournament in Australia during the World Cup.

As the most famous footballing tournament gets set to take place in Qatar this November, Ange and his players will take the journey over to Oz to compete in a 4-team event.

It’s yet to be confirmed who Celtic will be up against in the competition. However, the confirmation comes hours after Australian journalist Ray Gatt reported that the Hoops will face Rangers in Sydney.

Ange has been speaking via the Celtic website about the competition, and admitted he can’t wait to return home: “I haven’t been home for almost three years by the time this comes around so I’m super-excited. The club’s obviously been down there a couple of times before and I know just how passionate the Celtic fans are about the football club, so we’re looking forward to it.

“It is a homecoming in many respects. That’s where my roots are, that’s where I grew up and I know that since I’ve been in this position at Celtic, people have been following my journey, whether they know me or not, and I’ll have a great sense of pride going back to Australia as manager of Celtic. I think the Australian public in general will take great pride that one of theirs is in charge of such a famous club.

“We just want to represent this football club and what it’s all about. I’ve understood the responsibility I have for it since I’ve taken on the role, but I just know how passionate people are and the first thing is they’ll want to get to a ground and watch the team play, just to have that feeling.

“It will create, I think, a unique atmosphere which only a Celtic crowd can provide. So for Australia sporting followers, they’re realise it’s something special. Just being back on home soil and bringing this great football club to my shores will be special.”

Celtic confirm plans to keep players fresh during World Cup break

You can understand why Celtic have chosen the opportunity to head to Australia during the World Cup break. The Premiership will be out of action between November 14th and December 16th.

There’s clearly a big commercial opportunity for the club in heading back to Ange’s homeland. Considering the massive increase in interest Aussie supporters have for Celtic this year, it ticks a few boxes for the football club.

Of course, it remains to be seen who we’re up against in the tournament and how it will work. If we are indeed up against our rivals, it’s not something you can see going to down too well with supporters. Not if it’s simply part of a friendly competition.

It’s also unclear just how strong the Celtic squad will be. We have a host of our top players who will be eyeing up Qatar 2022 with their respective countries. At best, it’ll be an opportunity for those who aren’t so fortunate to stay fit whilst the fringe players will likely be given an opportunity.

It’s ideal that Celtic have at least planned something for the World Cup. Especially so far in advance too. It’ll be interesting to see how we fare, and Postecoglou will certainly want to show up well in his homeland.

Hopefully, the trip proves to be a major success regardless of who we’re up against.
