Celtic’s Nir Bitton has opened up on his recent injury troubles and revealed how they have changed him as a person.

The Israeli midfielder missed the majority of last season after suffering a horrendous knee injury. Bitton admits his recovery was a struggle at the time but now he is in a better place because of it.

He told the official Celtic website: “After you go through such a bad injury and it keeps you away from football for such a long time it changes you.

“Right now I can see how it’s changed my thinking and my mentality. Before when I didn’t play I’d feel angry, whereas now I just appreciate every moment.

“I still want to play every game, but now disappointment doesn’t hurt as much because I know it could be a lot worse. I appreciate every moment on the pitch.

“The most important thing for a professional athlete is to be healthy because if he’s not healthy, he can’t do what he loves.”

Can Bitton kick on after injury?

Bitton is often disregarded as a first-team Celtic player for whatever reason. The fact of the matter is that he has played 183 times for the club. That’s more than the likes of Tom Rogic and Kieran Tierney who have been there for several years.

Bitton is a capable Celtic player who is more than happy to fill in wherever he’s needed. He routinely has to cover in central-defence when we’re short at the back and he usually does so to the best of his ability.

He’s also a massive character in the dressing room and has been part of some of Celtic’s finest triumphs. Bitton has been through thick and thin with the club and come out the other side a more rounded person.

We need to keep those kind of guys around.
