Is Lewis Morgan’s Celtic renaissance over for now?

Lewis Morgan’s appearances for Celtic certainly seem to have halted over the last month or so.

However, if you take a look at his stats, there’s been a bit of a worrying trend in recent weeks. Morgan’s last appearance for Celtic came in the 4-1 win at AIK in Stockholm. Ironically, it was in that match where we notched his first Celtic goal too.

Since then, he hasn’t been given any further opportunities. He was on the bench at Ibrox at the beginning of the month, and also made the squad to face Rennes. He didn’t feature in either match, however.

In the last two league matches, Morgan hasn’t actually been a part of Celtic’s matchday squads. That’s despite there being no reports of an injury and at a time when squad rotation is of vital importance.

At the same time, Mohamed Elyounoussi has been getting his shot to impress with Mikey Johnston sidelined. Where Morgan seemed to be the back-up left-winger over the course of August, that seems to have changed.

On-loan Saints star Elyounoussi played against Hamilton and Rennes. It wouldn’t be surprising if he started tomorrow night against Partick Thistle either.

But just where does it leave Morgan?

Lewis Morgan has to start from scratch once again

Sure, he has 10 appearances to his name this season. That actually reads quite well considering where he was last season in the pecking order.

But the problem is that most of those 10 appearances were matches in which he didn’t impress. The Celtic fans haven’t been overly-enthused by what he’s produced, which has been minimal productivity in the final third.

It’s perhaps too early to talk about loan deals and moves in January. After all, he could easily still get his chance in the coming weeks with how many games we have coming up.

But there’s a clear trend appearing in his lack of minutes over the last few weeks. If Neil Lennon had been impressed with him in recent outings, he wouldn’t have been left out of matchday squads in the Premiership.

Morgan now looks to be back to where he was at the start of the season. He’s on the outside looking in, and is waiting on his chance to get back in once again.

But it must now be a concern to see a talent such as Elyounoussi jumping ahead of him. When Johnston returns to action, that could push him down to third choice at best. As it stands, the former St Mirren and Sunderland star has it all to do once again.
