It looks like Neil Lennon may be being made a fool again by Celtic this summer.
The Hoops boss has continually spoken in the media about wanting new recruits in ahead of European ties. Despite the club signing four players so far this summer, the Northern Irishman has continually been let down in his efforts to bolster his squad.
And as Celtic prepare to face Swedish champions AIK on Thursday, Lennon may be about to be embarrassed again.
Lennon has made another big promise to the Celtic fans
On Monday the Daily Record claimed in this article that Lennon was hoping to have another new signing confirmed ahead of the tie against the Swedes.
Europa League guidelines (page 41) say that clubs can register up to two new players to their matchday squad before midnight on the night before the match. That means that Lennon and the recruitment team have until Wednesday night to secure any new signings.
At the time of writing (Tuesday morning) it’s looking increasingly unlikely that the club have anything ready to confirm. Chat has been ongoing about both a left and right-back while a loan move for Jordon Ibe has also been discussed. However, it looks like another major European deadline is once again going to pass the club by.
You have to have some deal of sympathy for Lennon who probably feels more than a bit left down. But the Northern Irishman should also learn when it’s best not to make promises. After letting the club down on and off the park so far this summer maybe he should stop promising and start delivering.
