Is Tommy Wright correct with his Celtic verdict?

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has continued his glowing praise of Celtic ever since the game last weekend.

Saints couldn’t live with the Hoops at Parkhead. Despite the fact Wright has managed to frustrate Celtic in the past, his side offered absolutely nothing in the 7-0 obliteration.

Wright’s side failed to score a single goal against Celtic last season in any of their five matches against us. And that’s the way it continued last weekend in a fine performance from Neil Lennon’s squad.

Wright hasn’t been short on praise for the champions either. And once again, whilst speaking to the Courier, the Northern Irishman has given Celtic further plaudits by claiming he’s never seen them play better.

“It was the best I have seen Celtic play in terms of the tempo and quality they produced. Ryan Christie was unplayable at times but we have to bear in mind Celtic spent £20 million on their starting 11 and had £10 million signings on the bench.

“The gulf in class was evident. But that doesn’t take away from the fact we should have been better.

“My players have to learn from it and take responsibility for their own performances, then they have to help a teammate. There was a lack of cohesion and communication because four or five of their goals could easily have been prevented”

Is the St Johnstone manager Wright?

So is Wright right about it being the best we’ve played in some time? The scoreline of course perhaps tells its own story, but what about the performance overall?

We’ve had some cracking performances at Parkhead over the last few years since Lennon left the club. The 5-1 and 5-0 maulings of Rangers come to mind. The 6-1 hammering of Kilmarnock under Brendan Rodgers. There have been some incredible displays alright.

But Celtic really could’ve had 10 on Saturday. There was a renewed energy to our play. There was no desire to keep the ball in the defence for longer than necessary. The Hoops were quick to get the ball to Ryan Christie and Mikey Johnston in particular. Both men produced wondrous displays against Wright’s men.

Meanwhile, we had a perfect debut from Hatem Abd Elhamed, whilst both Kristoffer Ajer and Nir Bitton looked extremely comfortable at the back. Everything about the performance was spot on. You’ll do well to find a more all-round perfect display from Celtic over the last few years.

But our true character will be on show this weekend at Fir Park. Nobody expects a 7-0 win over Steve Robinson’s impressive young side. But another confident display with a couple of goals and a clean sheet to our name would be most welcome.

Motherwell will pose a different threat, but more performances like last Saturday, and we’ll be striking the fear into everyone in Scotland.
