Israeli Report: Yossi Benayoun’s call-up plan for Celtic winger Liel Abada

Celtic winger Liel Abada will be given a recall into the Israel senior squad for June’s Nations League matches, according to Israeli outlet Sport5.

Abada spent the last fortnight with the Israel under-21s as he looked to help them push ahead in their Euro 2023 qualification hunt. Abada scored in a 2-2 draw against Poland before playing 90 minutes in the 1-0 loss to Germany yesterday.

His demotion to the under-21s came despite scintillating form for Celtic in 2022. It was also the first squad selection without previous boss Willibald Ruttensteiner, who left the post back in February. Instead, it was down to interim manager Gadi Bromer, who decided not to call Liel back up.

However, ex-Liverpool hero Benayoun, who is now the GM of the Israeli national team, is set to give him a swift recall with Bromer’s short spell coming to an end. Benayoun will be the one to pick the squad for the June schedule according to Sport 5. All the while, the search will go on for Israel regarding the appointment of a new head coach.

Sport 5 claims that Abada is one of 5 under-21 players Benayoun feels is ready to make the step-up for those matches.

Abada has wowed in his debut season at Celtic Park with 14 goals and 11 assists to his name [Transfermarkt].

Liel Abada more than capable of making an impact at senior international level

Abada stated last week that he was left “a little disappointed” at being snubbed for the senior side [ONE]. You could see exactly why too given the circumstances.

He’s been one of the top performers this season. Abada has been a regular for Ange Postecoglou and has perhaps proven more important than Nir Bitton, who made the Israel senior squad as always. In addition to that, the matches played were both friendly encounters. If ever there was a time to mix things up, it was going to be over the last week.

Granted, Abada is up against some heavy quality in the Israel senior set-up. In his position alone he’s effectively up against the likes of Munas Dabbur and Manor Solomon. Game-time is always going to be difficult to come by when you’re competing with proven talents such as those.

But it’s clear Abada is thought of highly amongst the Israeli ranks. At only 20 years of age, he has plenty of time to be making an impact for his country. Even still, he has every right to feel as though he could be doing it now. Not in 2 or 3 years time.

Come June, Israel will face off against Iceland twice and Albania respectively. All 3 matches will be Nations League clashes. The ideal stage for Liel to show his international worth.

A managerial change will hopefully open itself up to new opportunities in the long run too. But for now, hopefully, he keeps his fine form up as we reach the final stages of the domestic season.
