Three’s no doubt many Celtic fans were perplexed when Christopher Jullien didn’t make his Hoops debut against Sarajevo in the Champions League.
The £7million signing was instead on the bench for the Hoops, and didn’t feature in the game at all. However, some recent comments from Hoops boss Neil Lennon have shed more light on the situation.
Manager sheds light on situation
Lennon has revealed that the player isn’t ready to start a game yet. That is why Nir Bitton played at centre-back in the 3-1 win over Sarajevo.
He has admitted that the situation isn’t ideal though, and that might lead to another centre-back being purchased.
“Nir can play at the back, but it’s not ideal” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.
“Isn’t up to speed yet”
“Christopher isn’t up to speed yet, and we are still looking to strengthen there, too.”
It will be interesting to see if Jullien features in the upcoming pre-season friendly against Rennes.
Judging by the manager’s comments, it is unlikely that he will start Saturday’s game against the French side. There is no use in rushing the player into the side if he is not fully fit though.
It is better to have Jullien fit and ready for the later rounds of Champions League qualifying. There is no doubt that Lennon would like the player to have some game time before making his competitive debut.
But if Jullien has to be thrust into a high-profile match in his first Celtic appearance then so be it.
