It should be a surprise to nobody Shaun Maloney is excelling with Belgium; Celtic must be watching

Celtic fans loved Shaun Maloney’s appearance at Euro 2020 tonight as he performed a crucial backroom role for Roberto Martinez’s Belgium.

The Belgians are through to the quarter-finals of the competition after a hard-earned 1-0 win against holders Portugal.

Maloney could be seen on television cameras communicating instructions to some of the country’s world-class players.

At one point his name was trending on Twitter, as fans based in England and those outside of the Celtic bubble showed surprise he was on the touchline. Some of the comments were borderline disrespectful in my view!

No-one should really be surprised. Maloney was always a cultured, thoughtful player. He was also at one point playing some wonderful football that wasn’t out of place at the international level.

Having worked under some exceptional managers, he’s always been a ‘student of the game’ too.

Shaun Maloney is on Celtic fans minds after Belgium exploits

We’ve spoken about Maloney a lot on 67 Hail Hail over the last few months. From his brilliant interview with Hugh MacDonald, to the links with our vacant director of football position, there’s a lot to speculate on.

Let’s not forget Maloney has already been employed as a coach at Lennoxtown. He was working with young players at the club when Martinez came calling.

He seems destined to return to Celtic in some capacity one day, either as a coach or in a more technical staff role. The club should definitely be keeping an eye on his career.

So while he was getting a bit of stick tonight on social media, Bhoys fans were there to show respect and wonder what’s next.

Many would love to see him as part of Ange Postecoglou’s staff.

These supporters have taken to Twitter this weekend to share their thoughts on the former attacker…
