It was a bad day for the Celtic-themed MLS figures

It was a bad weekend of MLS results for those with a Celtic connection this weekend.

Lewis Morgan, Ronny Deila, Gary Mackay-Steven, and Andrew Gutman all suffered defeats with their respective sides on matchday two of America’s top division.

For Morgan’s Inter Miami, it was a highly-dramatic day away to DC United. The young winger, who moved to Florida from Celtic in January, thought he had put his side 2-0 ahead with his first goal for Inter.

However, after a VAR check, the goal was ruled out and team-mate Romain Torres was sent off. Miami were already 1-0 ahead after Morgan bagged his first MLS assist with a low cross for Rodolfo Pizarro to slam home in the second minute.

But after going down to 10 men, DC scored twice in the next eight minutes to win the game 2-1. That means that Morgan has now lost his first two matches at LAFC and DC United. He does, however, finally have an assist to his name as he chases his first goal.

Ronny’s luck wasn’t much better

Former Celtic manager Deila was also chasing his first MLS win with New York City last night too. He took his side to last season’s MLS finalists Toronto FC.

Despite putting up a battling showing, however, Deila’s side also slumped to their second consecutive defeat with a 1-0 loss. That follows on from their 1-0 loss at Columbus Crew last week.

Gary Mackay-Steven came on for the closing stages against Toronto, but he failed to make any influence. It leaves Ronny’s side without a single goal in their opening two league games.

And finally, Celtic loanee Gutman was a 79th-minute sub with his FC Cincinnati side 2-1 down at Atlanta United. Unfortunately, given the lack of time on the pitch, he wasn’t able to make any sort of impact after coming on from the bench for the second consecutive match.

Gutman also came on against New York Red Bulls last week in a 3-2 set-back. Therefore, he, like Deila and Morgan, has also suffered two defeats from two.

All of the Celtic or ex-Celtic figures above have now suffered two defeats from two games. They’re all locked on zero points at the bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference along with Philadelphia Union.

Here’s hoping, for all mentioned, that their drop in form is only temporary.
