Rennes have contacted Sampdoria in order to strike a deal for Celtic-linked Omar Colley, according to Italian outlet SampNews24.

The popular Italian website believes that the Ligue 1 side got in touch with Sampdoria earlier today regarding the Gambian.

SampNews24 reports that they’re looking to reach an agreement before Celtic decide to make their move. They state that Rennes have also expressed their interest in Colley in the past.

That could be an issue for Celtic. The Daily Mail (print edition, 10/09, back page) reported today that the Hoops would only make a move for Colley if they sold Kristoffer Ajer this summer.

Therefore, the club could become embroiled in a waiting game before any move from Parkhead for the Gambian international is sanctioned

Should Celtic move for Colley now?

The issue Celtic have here is that the club doesn’t know whether Ajer is going to go this summer or not. The Mail report stated today that there were no offers yet to even consider.

So even if Rennes are now in contact with Sampdoria or not, any other interested parties could steal a march on the Hoops for Colley if they come forward now.

There is a potential argument that Celtic should just move for the towering centre-back immediately. The Daily Mail (print edition, 10/09, back page) believes that Sampdoria could be prepared to sell for less than the £10.8m figure in his release clause.

However, it would be a heck of an outlay for the club to splash out if they weren’t to get rid of Ajer this summer. The last thing we need to go doing is actively pursuing the departure of one of our main centre-backs to fund another.

In truth, there doesn’t look to be any real solution to this. If we’re waiting on a potential sale happening before we move for Colley then that’s just the hand we’ve been dealt with. Celtic can’t stop any other interested parties coming forward before they allow a player to leave.

We’ll keep tabs on this one as we have done right throughout the window, as we wait to see if Rennes’ reported contact with Sampdoria comes to anything.

In other news, a Championship club is reportedly interested in signing up a young Celtic record-breaker.
