Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has reflected on the club’s transfer strategy following the conclusion of the January transfer window on Tuesday.
The 57-year-old led the Bhoys through his fourth transfer window in charge at Parkhead, making four new additions to his squad.
However, the Hoops entered the next stage of our evolution under Postecoglou after the first major sales of some of his key signings.
Following an impressive 18 months for club and country, Josip Juranovic departed to join Union Berlin, and he could soon be followed by Giorgos Giakoumakis.
Although plenty of players have left the club in Ange Postecoglou’s short time in charge, these two exits are arguably the biggest under the former Socceroos boss.
This is due to their importance to the squad after arriving at the club during the summer of 2021. However, the Celtic manager has moved quickly to bring in replacements.
In recent months, Postecoglou hinted that this was the next stage of evolution for this Celtic side as he aims to continue improvements at Parkhead.
And speaking in a press conference ahead of this evening’s game against Livingston, the Celtic manager reiterated similar words as he reflected on the club’s January transfer business.
The ex-Yokohama F Marinos manager opened up on the importance of the Hoops running a ‘sustainable model’, which should allow the club to continue improving.
He said [The National]: “It’s important to this football club that we run a sustainable model. It’s not unique to us. In terms of clubs our size, that’s what they do.
“It’s not about just spending money, it’s about spending money we have brought in and being strategic about it. If we were bringing in players who weren’t increasing in value, then we wouldn’t be able to reinvest that into players to replace them.
“All those things have a knock-on effect, and when you look at our current squad, we have a great deal of value in that squad.
“If we do have to replace someone, we will have the funds to replace them with a good player, and I think that’s important.
“It’s not about how much we spend, it’s what we spend it on. That’s much more important because I take that responsibility very seriously. We are not spending money we don’t have.
“Throughout supporters or throughout sponsorships or through our player sales, it’s all money that’s hard-earned. It’s not just given to us. We don’t just have a benefactor throwing money at us.
“So, it’s important that that money is spent wisely. I think we’ve done that in the time I’ve been here, and we’ll continue to do that.”
Ange Postecoglou has introduced transfer change that supporters have been wanting for years.
Of course, over the years, Celtic have had great success buying and selling in the transfer window. However, the overall plans and structure never really felt like they fit into place.
That has since changed with the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, who, along with his coaching staff, has introduced transfer plans supporters have wanted to see for years.
The club are buying in underrated transfer markets, such as the Asian or South American leagues, and have had great success so far.
This past month, we have also seen popular members of the Celtic squad depart. But, we have sold them for profit and replaced them with younger players who look like they have plenty of potential.
This strategy is clearly important to Postecoglou and his recruitment staff, and it is interesting to hear him discuss this in his comments above.
Ultimately, it has been a great success so far during his first 18 months at the Hoops, and hopefully, we can continue to see that success over the next few years.
