There looks to be yet another blow for Rennes as Jakob Johansson could reportedly miss the Celtic game on Thursday.

The Rennes midfielder was seen coming out of training on Monday on crutches. According to Ouest France, this was due to a nasty collision on the training pitch that saw him pick up an ankle injury.

Johansson had already missed the trip to Brest at the weekend through a knock too. For the player himself, it doesn’t look like he’ll be taking to the field on Thursday night.

It’s a slight blow to Rennes, who would’ve wanted their Swedish internationalist available to them. He made a total of 16 Ligue 1 appearances last season, but struggled with knee and other ligament issues. It’s clear the midfielder has been injury-prone for some time.

He’s also managed to nab 16 international caps. However, this season for Rennes, he’s yet to play a single minute of league action despite making four out of the five match-day squads.

Competition for places means Johansson likely wouldn’t have started

There is a plethora of emerging talent for Rennes in the midfield. Eduardo Camavinga, Clement Grenier, and James Lea Siliki likely would’ve kept Johansson out of the side.

Celtic will have to be at their best in the engine room in order to get anything from France. Their high-tempo style could be tricky to weather early on, but the Hoops have to show they can compete at this level.

It’s difficult to take heart from our 1-1 draw in France last time out. After all, it was against a much less impressive Rennes side. This Thursday will see us face a team with many more attacking talents than they had back in 2011.

Of course they’re also beatable at the same time if Celtic have the right attitude. The Hoops competed well with them in their pre-season friendly during the summer. However, not much can be read into that one either.

As for Johansson’s injury, it’s a slight blow for the Ligue 1 side, who likely would’ve had him in their matchday squad. However, they still have plenty of other talents to worry about.
