James McPake explains Celtic’s stance when he tried to sign Ben Summers on loan last season

Young Ben Summers is a player that has been in and around the Celtic first team over the course of this season and last.

The Celtic B team player is highly rated at the club and was involved in Brendan Rodgers’ preseason preparations as he took the youngster to the Portugal training camp and on the tour of Japan.

But now, Summers finds himself on loan at Dunfermline where he will join up with former Celtic B teammate, Ewan Otoo for the remainder of this season.

But Dunfermline boss, James McPake, has revealed that he tried to capture Summers last season and explained the reason why Celtic wouldn’t allow the move.

McPake said [The Courier], “It was difficult being in League One. Celtic wanted to keep Ben last summer, but I don’t think it’s something they would have looked at for the level they see Ben at.

“But now we’re in the Championship and we’ve managed to get him in.”

Ben Summers could have a big future at Celtic

Clearly, young Summers could be a very good player for Celtic in the future. The fact that he has been involved in Celtic’s first-team training and involved in this year’s preseason tells you that he is rated highly by the club.

With two (albeit cameo) first-team appearances under his belt, Summers has had a taster of what it’s like to play in front of a packed Celtic Park after he made his home debut in the 5-0 rout of Aberdeen on Trophy Day last season.

At 19 years old, Summers now needs to kick on and get senior football to aid his development and it seems that he will get exactly that at Dunfermline.

The Pars’ next match is at home against Raith Rovers on the 26th of August and I am sure the Celtic fans will have a close eye on that one to see if Summers makes his debut for the newly promoted club.
