Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has been sharing his memories of a dramatic battle against Celtic.
The former centre-back had celebrity Celtic fan Martin Compston on the latest episode of his ‘The Greatest Game‘ podcast, and their discussion reminded Carragher of the Celtic-Liverpool UEFA Cup games in 2o03.
“The atmosphere was fantastic”
“I was delighted when we got you. The atmosphere, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ before the game. I remember the first game…I’m like a kid, I just want to stay here, I don’t want to go back into the changing room. The atmosphere was fantastic. You scored after about a minute, and the noise…” Carragher trailed off as he remembered the noise when Henrik Larsson gave the Hoops the lead in the opening minutes of the first leg.
The games were certainly memorable occasions as Carragher suggests, but probably more for Celtic fans than Liverpool fans.
Hoops win is last competitive game between sides
John Hartson’s goal in the second leg is probably one of the most memorable Celtic European goals of the last 20 years. Unfortunately, the teams have not played each other in a competitive match since then. It would be good if that ended sooner rather than later.
If the teams meet next season for example, Liverpool would no doubt be big favourites for the game. However, you would not bet against the Hoops putting up a fight and making the game difficult for Liverpool. Celtic have improved in Europe recently, but Liverpool would be one of the biggest tests so far.
The atmosphere at the games would be unique though, as it is usually is when Celtic face teams from England. Celtic’s win over Liverpool in 2003 lives long in the memory, defeating them in 2020 would be an even bigger deal than that.
