Michael Gannon has revealed that ‘people around about’ Jens Berthel Askou have told him that he would take the Celtic manager’s job ‘in a heartbeat’.

Askou has been a revelation in Scottish football since joining Motherwell at the start of the season and the Dane even has the Fir Park club challenging Celtic at the top of the league.

After Celtic beat Motherwell at the weekend, Gannon has admitted that he has learned Askou would ‘jog along the M74’ to manage in Paradise.

Gannon says Jens Berthel Askou is desperate for the Celtic job

As Martin O’Neill holds the fort at Celtic, Gannon admits he’s been told that Askou is desperate to take on the Hoops job.

Gannon told Record Celtic podcast, “First of all, the manager, I understand the kind of interest in him from outside.

“And from what I can gather, Celtic are looking at him along with other options. And also, from what I’m told, he is extremely keen on that Celtic job.

“He would be off. I know some people are saying, oh, he’s looking further afield and that stuff. I think, I mean, from what I’m hearing from people around the route, his orbit, he would jog along the M74 to Parkhead.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt about it at all. I think he would snap it up in a heartbeat.”

Is Jens Berthel Askou the manager Celtic really need?

Askou’s Motherwell play the best football in the league. Attacking, free-flowing and direct, it’s the sort of style Celtic fans love.

Remarkably, the Fir Park club also have the best defensive record in the league with just 23 goals conceded, nine less than Celtic.

On top of that, Motherwell are the fourth top-goalscorers in the Scottish Premiership and after just 39 games in charge, Askou has won 21, drawn 11 and lost just seven.

That’s a remarkable record for a club with one of the smallest budgets in the league.
