Jeremie Frimpong says it will be “a dream come true” if he gets the chance to play against Copenhagen in February, as he also reflected on the joy of watching Celtic beat Lazio twice.
The Dutch full-back sensation is almost certain to be in the squad for the clashes against the Danish champions in seven weeks. Frimpong wasn’t registered for our six group stage matches in the Europa League but that didn’t stop him from experiencing a euphoric joy, in the stand.
“Aw, man, I’ve been wanting to play in European competition for the longest time,” he told the official website. “If I get the chance to play in the last 32 tie, that’ll be a dream come true for me. To play for Celtic in Europe? It’s quality. Even the thought of it gets me excited.
“Seeing Celtic Park, the fans, it’s a sell-out, it’s crazy. When Chris Jullien scored the header right near the end against Lazio, the fans went totally nuts – and I was going mental with them.
“I watched the Lazio game in Rome in my house, I put it up on my Instagram, I was over the moon. What a goal to win it with as well. Olivier was clinical.”
We must remember to protect Frimpong too
Chances are you just read those words in Frimpong’s voice. That’s the kind of effect he has on you. The wee man just makes you smile every time he opens his mouth. His enthusiasm is infectious and it will be great to have him available for every competition from now onwards.
Of course, we must be wary of throwing him into the deep end in some European games. For all of his quality, he is still only 19-years-old and has a lot to learn – especially on the continent where he’s never played a senior game.
Hatem Abd Elhamed is probably a much safer bet for those two games against the Danes and it would be great to have him fit and available as soon as possible.
But Frimpong will certainly have some sort of big role to play in the final five months of our season. You can be assured of that.
