Former Celtic defender Jeremie Frimpong has offered a classy farewell to the club, Neil Lennon and the fans.
The young Dutchman signed for Bayer Leverkusen today, after just over a year and a half with the Bhoys. A charismatic, entertaining full-back, Frimpong was popular amongst the supporters.
Celtic announced the departure of the 20-year-old earlier today, on Twitter. It led to an outpouring of well-wishes from the Hoops fans, and now the favour has been returned.
Featuring a video of highlights, Frimpong added:
“I wanna thank my teammates for their help, the Gaffer for his trust and all the @celticfc fans for their love!
I will forever be grateful to Celtic and I wish you all the best in the future!
Celtic effects of losing Jeremie Frimpong already felt
Neil Lennon announced his starting line-up to face Hamilton in the last hour, and the effects of losing Frimpong can already be felt.
Instead of Elhamed or Ralston, Lennon has chosen centre-back Kristoffer Ajer in the Dutchman’s stead. Ajer, unequivocally our best central defender this season, makes way for Shane Duffy and Nir Bitton in the middle of the back-line.
Bayer Leverkusen made their announcement on Twitter also, with a flashy, artistic image of the right-back. Bayer’s Sporting Director offered glowing praise of his new signing on the club’s website, saying:
“In Jeremie Frimpong, we have been able to sign a player with a great facility to develop and this again is a forward-looking transfer for Bayer 04.
“He’s technically strong, incredibly quick and has the desire to go forwards.
“Over the last year and a half, Jeremie has proved himself at an absolute top club in the physically very challenging Scottish league and in European competition. That important experience at Celtic, but above all his footballing ability, make him a very attractive young player.”
“I’m totally looking forward to the Bundesliga and, of course, this club in particular. Bayer 04 Leverkusen have regularly been in the Champions League and the Europa League.
“They demonstrated their ambition on the European stage last year in the two games against Glasgow Rangers.”
