Jermaine Jenas has no doubt about his ex-teammate Robbie Keane:
He deserves the opportunity to manage Celtic.
That’s the take that will divide Hoops fans on the reported frontrunner for the permanent job, should it be vacated in the summer.
Martin O’Neill cannot be ruled out yet, but in the event that the club opt for a change, Jenas feels that Keane warrants the Parkhead reins.
Agree or disagree?
Jermaine Jenas on Celtic candidate Robbie Keane
On the Wildcards Podcast, Jenas was asked if Keane would be the right appointment for Celtic, and whether he would be successful.
The ex-BBC pundit replied: “Yes and yes [is] probably the answer, just to answer them quickly.”

“Keano is a proper leader. When I was with him at Spurs, I think he was a leader off the pitch when it came to organising things for the lads, families and so on and so forth.
“He was an organiser on the pitch. He always set the standard most days. He’s not one of those ones who shies away from a challenge. And the natural links are there with Celtic. He played for Celtic as a player.
“He’s quite clearly on that side of town when it comes to supporting teams. So the fans are going to immediately take to him. And I think he just deserves it now.
“I think he just deserves his opportunity in the spotlight. And I think that not only will the Celtic fans love him, but he will do well there. I think he’s got a good team around him.”
Keane is certainly remembered fondly for his excellent form when brought to the club on loan from the second half of the 2009-10 season, a disappointing campaign for the club as a whole.
His spell managing in Israel is troubling for parts of the Parkhead support, but it clearly isn’t dissuading the club from considering him as a candidate.
But how viable is Keane as an option for the summer?
The links are back again… Would you welcome Robbie Keane as Celtic manager?
Tell us why…
Robbie Keane’s candidacy for Celtic
Keane’s full managerial record, as of 15 March 2026, is as follows:
| Club | Tenure | Matches | Won | Drawn | Lost | Win % | Honours |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maccabi Tel Aviv | July 2023 – June 2024 | 53 | 38 | 7 | 8 | 71.7% | Israeli Premier League (23/24), Toto Cup |
| Ferencváros | Jan 2025 – Present* | 74 | 47 | 13 | 14 | 63.5% | NB I League (24/25) |
| TOTAL | 127 | 85 | 20 | 22 | 66.9% |
Crucially, he has also enjoyed a stellar season in Europe for Ferencvaros, currently leading Braga 2-0 in the Europa League round of 16.
In defeating Ludogorets in the previous round – in which Celtic were knocked out by Stuttgart – he secured the Hungarian side’s first European knockout win after Christmas in 54 years.
Their League Phase campaign wasn’t bad either; featuring wins away at both RB Salzburg and Genk as well as a sweet 2-1 home win over Rangers, after which Keane absolutely hammered the Ibrox side in the press.
