The Daniel Kelly situation at Celtic took a bit of a turn this week after Brendan Rodgers took a tough stance with the young midfielder.

It appears that Kelly won’t participate any further in Celtic’s pre-season preparations whilst his contract issues rumble on and Rodgers has taken a hard stance on it this week.

However, Jim Duffy has offered young Kelly, and Celtic, some advice on how to resolve this situation and it seems that it could benefit both parties.

Duffy says Celtic should push the boat out and Kelly should stay

Duffy has urged Celtic to stretch their wage structure by Duffy to keep the young ‘talent’ at the club.

The former Morton gaffer has also explained to Kelly why he is best placed to stay at Paradise and continue his development under Brendan Rodgers.

Duffy said [Superscoreboard], “It is harder at Celtic, there’s no doubt, but I think Kelly is a talent.

“I know again we’re going about structure and budgets but I think they’ve got to push it out a little bit to try and keep, which I think is, a real rough diamond.

“I think he could be a top player. Just want to try and make sure he gets a little bit more game time, I understand that, but for the young lad himself, he doesn’t want to get too frustrated and Brendan Rogers will nurture him, but I don’t think there is a better place for him to play football than be at Celtic.

“So I would advise him to stay there, try and get into the first team. He is good enough to try and force his way in there, and I think there’s nothing better fans like to see the young players coming through the ranks.”

Kelly was given six outings last season by Rodgers and has been offered a new deal as clubs circle the highly-rated teenager.

Duffy is the second pundit to tell Kelly to stay at Celtic after Chris Sutton advised him to be patient for his chance at Parkhead.

Whether he signs the contract or not is up in the air but Rodgers and the Celtic fans will be hoping he decides to extend his stay in Glasgow Kelly does look like he is a genuine academy prospect with a big future in the game.
