Joe Hart says he is “buzzing” and “truly honoured” to be wearing the number one jersey at Celtic over the coming season.

Hart has long been Ange Postecoglou’s first-choice goalkeeper at Celtic but the actual number one designation had been on the back of Vasilis Barkas.

Barkas’ exit to Utrecht opened the door for the Bhoys to make the symbolic switch and they did exactly that earlier today, removing squad number 17 from the Englishman and giving him number one.

Hart shared he was “buzzing” on his Instagram stories and in a post to his timeline said: “Big season ahead, I feel truly honoured to wearing the number one shirt for this special club Celtic. See you all soon.”

Supporters have responded warmly to Celtic’s move.

Not only did the official club posts on the issue see fantastic, positive interaction but the player has had that too with close to 15,000 likes and hundreds of comments on Instagram at the time of publishing.

Hart has become a real fan favourite since his move from Spurs, tapping into what it means to represent Celtic and expertly building a close relationship with supporters.

He’s been a class act on and off the pitch. The former England international is exactly the kind of personality we need to push for more trophies.

Hart could well have more competition next season, especially if a reported move for Benjamin Siegrist goes through, but he should remain the trusted choice of the manager.

Celtic’s new number one will again be a crucial part of the team, especially up against tough opposition in the Champions League group stages.
