Joe Ledley was a great signing for Celtic back in 2010. Joining the club on a free transfer from Cardiff City, the Welshman has four successful years at the club.

The Welsh midfielder proved to be an astute piece of business by Lennon and went on to win three titles and a Scottish Cup.

Ledley was also involved in that famous win over Barcelona and scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win over Rangers in his first season at the club.

Mulgrew played second fiddle to Ledley

So why does Ledley say he feels sorry for Charlie Mulgrew?

Ledley was Neil Lennon’s second signing of that summer but was bizarrely unveiled to the fans before the Celtic boss’s actual first addition of that transfer window which was, Mulgrew.

Ledley told the Let Me Be Frank podcast, “I remember speaking to Lenny and he said, ‘Listen, we’ve also signed Charlie today, but you’re obviously going to be up and signing tomorrow, so we’ll leave Charlie for a few days and obviously try and get a bigger name for the fans to sort of buzz off’.

“Charlie was signed for about three days and he waited for me to be announced and then Charlie was announced a few hours later. So I felt a bit sorry for him, but you know he was laughing about it.

“I wind him up about it all the time.”

Mulgrew’s brilliant Celtic career

Like Ledley, Charlie Mulgrew had a great career at Celtic. Spending six seasons at the club, the Scottish defender won five league titles and two Scottish Cups.

On top of that, Mulgrew swept the Player of the Year Awards in 2011/12 picking up the Player’s Player, PFA Player, Football Writers and the SPL Player of the Year.

And Like Ledley, the Celtic defender also played a massive part in that historic night against Barcelona at Celtic Park.

Now working as a coach for Hamilton Academicals, Mulgrew’s career after hanging up his boots continues whereas Ledley runs his own football academy.
