Celtic fans have been left annoyed by the Scottish FA decision to appoint referee John Beaton for next Saturday’s game against Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

It’s his first derby assignment since the controversial defeat to the Ibrox side in December 2018.

Celtic were left aghast after Alfredo Morelos escaped punishment for a horror incident involving Anthony Ralston.

In a statement, released in January 2019, the club said: “It is reported that no action was taken because the match referee saw all of the incidents in question.

“Given that the referee took no action at the time, this tends to suggest that such conduct, which in one instance led to a Celtic player, Anthony Ralston, being injured, is acceptable in Scottish football. That cannot be right.

“On the day, Celtic did not play well enough to win the match, something we accept. However, this issue goes beyond the result of the match.”

Pundit Chris Sutton also called Beaton’s behaviour into question after social media rumours he was pictured in a Rangers supporters pub on the night of the match (The Glasgow Times).

There will certainly be a massive spotlight on his decisions at the upcoming fixture at Celtic Park as a result of all this drama.

Ultimately if Celtic play well then it shouldn’t matter who the referee is or what decisions he makes. That’s been the philosophy for decades.

As long as Neil Lennon’s Bhoys turn up and perform to the best of their abilities, we should pick up all three points.

Graeme Stewart and David Roome will be the linesmen on the day, with Don Robertson the fourth official.
