Former Celtic forward John Hartson has labelled Arsenal’s bid for Kieran Tierney as “an embarrassment”. The Gunners are reported to have had a £15million bid for the Scotland international rejected by Celtic. (The Scottish Sun)
They are expected to return with a larger offer however Hartson, who played for the London side between 1995 and 1997, thinks it will have to be considerably greater. He took to Twitter to show his disgust at the report.
Wan-Bissaka example
Hartson is spot on about the derisory offer. If Kieran Tierney was playing at a similar level down south he would be worth about three times the reported fee.
Take the current situation with youngster Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a good gauge. His employers Crystal Palace are reported to be looking for upwards of £50million with Manchester United likely to pay that amount.
The English under-21 international has nowhere near the same big match experience as Tierney. At the age of 22, Tierney has played 170 times for Celtic and has 12 Scotland caps. The youngster has played in numerous derby matches and excelled on the European stage too.
All of Celtic’s players are for sale at the right price. However, Tierney is a special example. The kid bleeds green and white and will want to stay with his boyhood club for as long as possible. He has a lengthy contract and there’s no need for Celtic to sell.
He will have to go at some stage, but when he does it will be for a far higher fee than £15million.
