John Hartson urges board to strengthen Celtic squad this summer

John Hartson has stated that the Celtic board need to invest in some new signings this summer.

Celtic’s performances under Neil Lennon have dipped since he’s come in. It looks as though too many players have been asked to go to the well too often.

Players such as Scott Sinclair and Tom Rogic have struggled to hit the heights of the past this season. Losing the likes of Moussa Dembele and Stuart Armstrong, meanwhile, has been a blow for the club in terms of their quality this term.

And Hartson believes that the board could do the club a huge favour by investing in the summer. Speaking in the Scottish Sun, the Celtic hero said the following:

“The team needs help. It needs some signings. There are six players to go back from their respective loan deals who’ll need to be replaced. The Champions League qualifiers start in July, the Scottish Cup Final is May 25.

“The boys only get four weeks off which is not much of a break and the international players will get far less. I’d like to see investment coming in.

“But whoever is going to decide who leaves and who comes in, it needs to be done fairly soon. There is so much work to be done”

An exciting summer ahead

Much of the narrative about Celtic’s summer overhaul has been a tad negative. But it could prove to be an extremely exciting time for the club.

The Hoops, contrary to what Hartson says, actually only have four loan signings due to go back. We made five of them this season, but Daniel Arzani has another year on his loan deal. The likes of Dorus de Vries, Mikael Lustig, Cristian Gamboa, Dedryck Boyata, and Emilio Izaguirre are also out of contract. There will surely be a host if incomings regardless of who the manager is.

But that should mean some strengthening to the squad. Celtic are now in the process of building the team that will effectively look to win us 10-in-a-row. There hasn’t been a more appropriate time to seriously splash the cash than there will be this summer.

Nobody knows just how many players Celtic need. But despite having depth this season, not enough of the squad players have made an impression during their time on the pitch. For Celtic to freshen things up and continue their dominance of Scottish football next season, that has to change.

Hopefully, the board takes an ambitious view in the summer. Celtic needs strengthening and freshened up. Failure to do so and it could be a difficult season ahead.
