Former Celtic defender John Hughes has piled the praise on Ryan Christie after seeing the attacker in action in midweek.
The Hoops man was in scintillating form as he grabbed a double in the 5-0 win over Nomme Kalju. Christie has now netted three goals in three matches at the start of this season after a horrendous facial injury ended his last campaign in April.
He’s looking every bit a talisman for Neil Lennon’s side. But one man who’s not too surprised is Hughes – his former boss at Inverness.
“I felt he was man of the match tonight, as he was last week”, he told BBC Sportsound (24/7/2019). “I just wonder if he’s making up for lost time after the horrendous injuries.
“He won Brendan over last year and he’s certainly won Neil Lennon over. He’s one of the first names on the team sheet.
“And we’re all talking about Kieran Tierney, and rightly so, bigger and better things in the English Premier League, Callum McGregor.
“Ryan Christie must be on the radar of big English Premier League clubs with these kinds of performances.”
Hughes knows Christie better than most
Hughes has made the point that we’re all thinking. Given Christie’s recent injury problems you almost forget the impact he had on the club in the middle part of last season.
Since his big break through at Murrayfield, Christie has become one of our most important players. He provides drive from midfield, a killer pass and great finishing ability.
He is sure to be interesting a number of teams down south and that can hardly be considered a surprise. When you compare the Scotland international’s displays to that of Tom Rogic, it really is night and day.
Christie possesses all of the ability but also looks intent to get involved in every game. He was booked for a rash challenge in the first-half of Wednesday’s game. While that wasn’t exactly a great contribution it did show just how willing he was to impress.
Celtic fans can look forward to a massive season from the 24-year-old. We’re all just hoping he can stay injury free.
