Former Celtic defender John Hughes has revealed that he still has faith in Leigh Griffiths’ ability as a player. The Hoops striker has struggled this season, and has not been at his best for the club.
Despite this, Hughes feels that it is wrong to write the striker off.
“He’ll never lose it”
“I’d never give up on Griff because he has the talent. He’s a goalscorer, and he’ll never lose it” Hughes said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
Hughes did admit though that injury issues might mean that the player might never be the goalscorer he once was, and as a result the Hoops might look to bring in another striker in the transfer window.
“I very much doubt he’ll get back to that 40-goal season level because of the injury problems he’s had. For that reason, I still think Celtic will bring in one or two to take them to where they want to go.”
Griffiths has only scored three goals this season, which is why the Hoops will be looking to bring another striker in, as Hughes has indicated.
That might not help Griffiths’ prospects of first-team football. However, it will benefit the Hoops team in the long run, and for the rest of the season in the short-term.
Started the season off well
Griffiths did start the season well for the Hoops, in his return to the first-team, but since then he has found it difficult to hold down a first-team place.
However, it is easy to see why Hughes trusts the player, after all, he has scored 107 goals for Celtic. Will he get to add many more to his Hoops goal tally? That remains to be seen.
Griffiths will go down in history as a very good Celtic striker. Hopefully before his time at the club comes to an end he will have a part to play in more titles won.
