Celtic interim manager John Kennedy has given his first interview since being appointed in the wake of Neil Lennon’s exit.
Celtic TV published the chat with Gerry McCulloch on the official YouTube channel this evening.
He was asked for his thoughts on Lennon’s departure as well as his short-term goals for the rest of the season.
Kennedy was also asked whether he was planning changes for this Saturday’s match against Aberdeen.
The interim boss said: “There are small things we’ve discussed already. There’s things we’ve looked at in training.
“This year, there’s been a lack of consistency, in terms of not being clinical enough at the top end, sometimes maybe forcing things too quickly and not having good enough quality attacks.
“Secondly, giving too many cheap goals away. Again, it’s facing up to honesty of that. We’ve conceded too many goals from set plays.”
A return to patient possession play?
The comment about ‘forcing things too quickly’ is an interesting one for me. We know that when Lennon joined the club he wanted to gradually move Celtic towards a more direct tactical approach.
It was actually a point of frustration for him, for quite a while.
We’ve seen this season that balls into the box and shots from distance have been plentiful, but with little success.
Perhaps Kennedy is suggesting a return to more of the kind of patient build-up we witnessed during the Brendan Rodgers reign.
There’s little point in taking a shot at goal or crossing the ball into the box if there is a low percentage chance of retaining possession.
His team selection and tactical set-up on Saturday against Aberdeen will be fascinating. Finally, Celtic games are interesting again!
