John Kennedy looking to new targets after David Turnbull breakdown

Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy says the club have not been too damaged by the David Turnbull saga. Celtic finally pulled out of a move for the talented teenager on Tuesday after weeks of failed negotiations.

Turnbull has dominated the majority of Celtic’s transfer chat in recent times so you’d expect the club to be wounded by their failure to capture him. However, Kennedy says they’re ready to move on quickly.

What did he say?

The former centre-back told the BBC: “Not everything works out, so we’ve got to move on and do business elsewhere.

“It’s one where you don’t just put all your eggs in one basket.

“Things are still functioning as normal. What heads of recruitment do, they come in and do what’s right for the manager and the club.

“They don’t come in and do things their own way. They have a view, an opinion, but ultimately they have to go out and sign players which suit the manager’s style, the club’s structure.”

Sense of perspective

Given the public and lengthy nature of the Turnbull saga, it’s very easy to forget exactly what Celtic require this summer. Signing the Motherwell youngster would have been a boost but it’s hardly season defining.

We’ve got gaps in key defensive areas at present and could also probably do with another striker. Hopefully Kennedy and the rest of the recruitment team are working hard to sort those issues.

Kennedy’s words on the head of recruitment are all well and good, but the truth is that Celtic should have had someone in by now. Lee Congerton departed the club nearly two months ago and little has been done to replace him since. We’re now just a week away from our first pre-season friendly and the squad is extremely bare.

It’s time to get to work in the transfer window.
