John Kennedy has today reiterated Celtic’s commitment to youth development, as he hinted at more prospects coming through the academy next season.

It was a highly successful year for the Hoops in terms of young call-ups over the last 12 months. Karamoko Dembele was the standout as he made a sensational debut against Hearts on trophy day. Armstrong Oko-Flex, meanwhile, made his first squad appearance at Rugby Park but didn’t feature.

Mikey Johnston had a breakthrough season as he made 23 appearances for the Hoops. His dynamism and eye for goal impressed, and there are many more where that trio came from too.

Speaking about young talent’s opportunities at Celtic, assistant manager Kennedy gave an insight into the club’s goal.

A raft of talent still to make an impact from the youths

It’s difficult to pick out who could be next to make an appearance for their beloved Bhoys. You can pluck so many bright young stars from the academy that would be deserving of their chance to shine.

Even young Ewan Henderson, who was yet another success story last season from the youths, could have a breakthrough campaign like Johnston had this year.

But inside Lennoxtown, there are a few notable youngsters who could make the step up. The obvious one would be young Jack Aitchison, who continues to prove himself as too good for the youth ranks. He also had two loan spells at Dumbarton and Alloa Athletic last season respectively – neither yielded anything productive.

Wallace Duffy, Robbie Deas, Kerr McInroy, and Barry Coffey are all impressing too. Many of the youth players have been training with the first-team over the last 12 months, so they’ll have had a taster of the intensity levels they operate at.

Celtic appear to have a fresh impetus in bringing through the youngsters from the academy, and we certainly saw that last season. Not one of the youngsters who featured last season didn’t impress either.

The big question on everyone’s mind will be who is next to make their mark? Neil Lennon certainly has plenty to choose from in the coming months.
