John O’Shea has disclosed the reason why he snubbed Celtic for Manchester United as a teenager.

O’Shea revealed that United watching him win the under 17 European Championship in 1998 led to him joining the Premier League side.

“I was just about to sign for Celtic until United were able to watch me in those games” he told the Daily Record.

“It was a contributing factor in turning my career in that direction, so I have a lot to thank it for.”

It has to be said that O’Shea made the right decision in moving to Old Trafford. He won five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008.

Move to Old Trafford best for career

He would never had achieved that level of success, especially in Europe, if he had moved to Glasgow.
Of course, perhaps he could have won a move to England if he had made a great start of his Hoops career. The chances of that happening seems remote though.
O’Shea is still playing football, he is currently at Reading, trying to help them survive in the Championship.
The chances of him joining Celtic were most likely when he left Manchester United, but he spent years at Sunderland, eventually leaving at the end of last season.
It is a pity that such a decorated player never moved to Glasgow, but overall O’Shea made the right decision.
