Former Celtic boss Davie Hay has admitted that he has been impressed with Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo’s performances in a Hoops jersey so far.

The left-back, who was recently signed from Rapid Vienna, played both legs of the Champions League qualifier against Sarajevo.

Hay has been enamoured with Bolingoli’s style of play, but has cautioned that the player must curb his attacking instincts eventually.

“It was encouraging to hear him after the game talk about the need to tighten up the defensive side of his game. This will come” Hay said, as reported by the Evening Times.

“I like what I see. There is work to do but the lad is a footballer and one who likes to express himself.”

Bolingoli’s instinct so far for the Hoops has been to support the attackers as often as possible. That was particularly true in the 2-1 home win over Sarajevo.

Must improve defensive side of game

He came close to scoring for the Hoops on a number of occasions. However, his defensive game does have to improve, and he could have done better for Sarajevo’s goal.

However, as Hay points out, the player has admitted that he has to work on that side of the game.

It is still only the beginning of Bolingoli’s Celtic career, and he will have the chance to improve his game. The fact that a former Hoops boss is such a fan already can only be a good thing.
