Celtic are the most dominant club in Scottish football.
Officially crowned Scotland’s most successful club last season, Celtic has 119 trophies to their name after the Bhoys beat Rangers in the League Cup final.
Daizen Maeda’s winning Celtic penalty secured the trophy and set Brendan Rodgers on the road to his third domestic treble as the Hoops boss.
However, according to former Chelsea man John Terry, this shouldn’t have happened after what he predicted Steven Gerrard’s Rangers to do to Celtic back in 2019.
John Terry’s daft 2019 prediction that Rangers would dominate Celtic
Gerrard took charge of Rangers in 2018 and was charged with bringing silverware to the club.
However, his former England teammate Terry jumped the shark with this prediction in 2019 where he said the gap between Celtic and Rangers was closing.
Terry told The Herald, “You can see in the group that they have got that there is quality there and they are closing the gap on Celtic
“That was a big job in itself and I think he did that last year. What he has done, for me, is make people down south talk about Rangers.
“For the last few years, everyone has been speaking about Celtic. But Stevie has brought that glamour to the football club again, which I think it deserves. It is a huge club.
“You can see that [the balance of power is shifting]. Listen, Celtic are still a top side and the points difference showed that as well but what Rangers did last season, from the games that I saw, is close that gap, for sure.
“It will be interesting to see what happens this year.”
That’s a great point. This interview took place on the 1st of July 2019, so let’s see what’s happened since then.
Celtic’s dominance since John Terry’s 2019 Rangers prediction
Since that interview took place, Rangers have won just three pieces of silverware. Gerrard won the league title in 2021 with Giovanni van Bronkhorst adding the Scottish Cup in 2022 and Philippe Clement winning the League Cup in 2023.
Since then, however, Celtic have completely dominated Scottish football and even this season, are closing in on another treble.
So let’s take a look at Celtic’s trophy history as Terry’s words come back to haunt him again this season.
