Jonatha Afolabi’s injury picked up on international duty earlier this month appears to still be with him.
The Republic of Ireland youngster signed for Celtic during the summer from Premier League outfit Southampton. However, before he had the chance to make much of an impact, he was struck with a knock. This came when he was getting ready to face both Italy and Iceland respectively for the Ireland under-21s.
The striker picked up a hamstring knock, and it appears it’s still plaguing him. He originally told of the injury on his Instagram story.
Celtic’s reserves were in action today against Dunfermline Athletic in the Reserve Cup. The Hoops managed to take the win from Fife with a fine 1-0 success. The only goal of the game was scored by young USA-born Cameron Harper.
However, one of the most notable aspects of the game was that Afolabi wasn’t involved. Here’s a look at the matchday squad for this afternoon’s clash.

Afolabi not in but O’Connor and Dembele back in the fold
Hopefully, Afolabi won’t be far away from returning for the reserve squad. His progress this season will be worth keeping an eye on.
In any case, it was a well-timed goal from attacking-midfielder Harper. It comes just days after he spoke about wanting to make an impression in last week’s Celtic View (Volume 55, Issue 15, Page 32).
In addition to Harper’s goal, Karamoko Dembele also continued his return from injury. The much-talked-about wonderkid rattled a free-kick off the crossbar in the second-half in a notable contribution.
Lee O’Connor, meanwhile, bounced back from his sending off for Ireland under-21s against Iceland. He produced a solid performance to help the backline keep a fine clean sheet to progress to the next round.
Luca Connell wasn’t in the squad as he also continues to recover from a knock. He and Afolabi will both be hoping for a swift recovery as the season ticks on.
But it was another successful afternoon for the Hoops youngsters. They progress in the Reserve Cup after previous wins against Dundee and Greenock Morton respectively.
