Celtic’s Jonny Hayes had arguably his best night in a Hoops jersey when he helped the team to a historic 2-1 Europa League win over Lazio.
Hayes was solid in both defence and attack as Celtic won in Italy for the first time ever. However, the Hoops utility man is unsure if he will still be a Celtic player next season.
His contract expires at the end of this season, and he has admitted that talks have not yet started on the player signing a new deal with the club. However, he is not letting the lack of clarity over his future effect his game.
Hayes has confirmed that he would like to stay with the club, though.
“Day by day”
“Yeah, but it’s not something that’s been spoken about. I haven’t given it a moment’s thought to be honest. I’ve always been the kind of guy that takes life and football day by day and I’ll continue to do that” he said, as reported by the Evening Times, when asked if he’d like to sign a new deal with the Hoops.
“But I’m not young and naive. I know how things work in football. Now I’m just taking it day by day and enjoying my football” he concluded.
Hoops boss will probably want player to sign new deal
If you were to hazard a guess, you would imagine that Neil Lennon would like Hayes to sign a new deal with the Hoops. After all, he has featured Hayes in some big games for the side. However, for a variety of reasons the player might end up leaving the club.
We shall find out more about Hayes’ future at Celtic in the weeks and months to come. If he does stay, it will be a bonus for the club. However, if he leaves, he can be pleased with what he achieved in his time at the club.
