Josh Doig to Celtic would solve one of Ange Postecoglou’s key Parkhead issues

The Josh Doig to Celtic hype train is certainly heating up amongst supporters who were left intrigued after yesterday’s update on the player.

Doig has consistently been linked with Celtic since the January transfer window. Sky Sports believed as far back as then that we would be considering a move for the left-back this summer.

And it appears that the player is set to leave Easter Road in the coming days. Jack Ross spoke to BBC Sportsound yesterday before their Premiership opener against Motherwell [01/08, 15:47], and said the following:

“Josh is highly likely to leave the club. He’s been the subject of a lot of attention and concrete interest over the last few days. For us and Josh, it needs to reach a head one way or another. I’d like to keep him but it looks more likely he’ll leave the club and fairly soon.”

Daily Mail journalist Stephen McGowan yesterday reported that both Burnley and Watford are battling to sign the full-back.

The prospect of Josh Doig to Celtic doesn’t feel as likely as it should be

It doesn’t look as though Celtic are one of the clubs in negotiations with the Easter Road side if recent reports are anything to go by. However, the only parties that will know for sure are Celtic, Hibs, and the player himself.

From our perspective, it would be a massive upgrade on what we have at the club. Doig proved last season that he was a more effective option than Greg Taylor and Boli Bolingoli. Not to mention he’s only 19 years of age. There’s incredible potential there.

Whilst there are undoubted areas he needs to improve upon, particularly defensively, this would solve a key issue for Ange Postecoglou. It would give him a massively exciting talent that he can work with for the long-term as his number one left-back.

Celtic only need one more addition in the left-back area before we can be satisfied with our whack. With no other options seemingly arriving at the club anytime soon, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be sniffing an opportunity here.

And many Celtic supporters certainly believe he can make an impact in Glasgow over time. Here’s a look at how they reacted on Twitter to the prospect of securing the Hibs star:
