Josh King to Celtic link sparks some excitement; but Hoops fans not jumping the gun

The Josh King to Celtic rumours have plenty of Celtic fans excited, but there is also a sizable element that is refusing to jump the gun.

The Scottish Sun reported last night that King is being eyed up for a summer swoop by Eddie Howe. That’s despite the fact Howe has yet to be announced as the official successor to Neil Lennon.

Naturally, that’s left some fans wary. The report states Howe is already eyeing up transfer targets for the summer. That’s not inconceivable given the situation we find ourselves in. Especially if the new man doesn’t officially walk into the job until June.

But until he has been announced as the new boss, it’s difficult to be too definitive. Fans don’t want to get too excited over potential new arrivals just yet. Getting the manager in first will be the club’s main priority in any case.

Even so, it’s difficult not to raise an eyebrow with the King news. The Everton man has struggled to make an impact since signing for the Toffees on a six-month deal two months ago. King has made eight appearances but has yet to score a goal for his new club.

Josh King to Celtic would be terrific; but for many it’s looking too far ahead

He worked with Howe at Bournemouth between 2015 and 2020. But at 29, he’s coming into his peak years. It could be a struggle to try and get him to commit to Parkhead for what should be the most productive spell of his career.

Celtic still have the four strikers on their books at the minute too. Nobody knows when Odsonne Edouard will depart, but it would be ideal if we could keep him around for next season’s Champions League qualifiers at the very least.

King, meanwhile, will surely have his eyes set on trying to make an impact in Merseyside. Even if his contract is up in the summer, he’ll know a fine goalscoring run will see EPL suitors come in for him. It’s not as if he isn’t getting any opportunities either. King has featured in eight of Everton’s last 10 Premier League matches – albeit only for short periods.

A deal taking him to Celtic would be spectacular. But for many it’s way too early to start talking about potential incomings. At least until the manager gets both feet in the door. Here’s a look at some of the fan reaction to the Josh King to Celtic link:
