Brendan Rodgers has given plenty of kids their chance at Celtic.

Mikey Johnston was one who was handed his debut under the manager while Rodgers also gave Anthony Ralston a shot at his first outing in green and white. There are others who have benefited from the Irishman’s trust over the years.

The latest to be brought into Rodgers’ squad is Jude Bonnar who made his Celtic debut against Aberdeen as his side thumped their opponents 5-1 this season and he was on the bench away at Bayern Munich as well as for Premiership fixtures.

Bonnar, 19, has had to bide his time but now – away with the Scotland under-21s squad – the midfielder has spoken on cracking the first-team and being involved with training which has made him a better player already.

What Jude Bonnar says Brendan Rodgers has told him about Celtic chances

And he revealed what manager Rodgers has said to him about pushing on beyond this term after the gaffer credited his talents as being “technically very good”.

He said: “It’s been a good couple of months, getting my opportunity at the club and now to score for my country. The manager at my club has told me to keep doing the right things and to work hard and I will get my chances.”

Bonnar has learned from the Hoops A-squad since he arrived on the scene and it certainly can’t hurt that the club captain runs the show from the same position he calls his own.

That is why Bonnar namechecked the skipper, Callum McGregor, as one of the top professionals at the club that he looks up to.

And he hopes to emulate the 31-year-old one day as a Celtic player.

“In terms of who I look up to, I just watch the captain (McGregor) all the time and see what he does every day.

“All the Celtic players are top athletes and being around them every day makes me want to be like them. It was a dream come true to get on the pitch for Celtic. It was brilliant.

“I know I have to keep doing what I am doing and work hard and see where it takes me.”
