"Just chill"; Celtic derby hero Jota laughs off BBC Scotland's title race question

Celtic winger Jota wasn’t in the mood to entertain the notion of today’s 4-0 victory over Rangers being a big statement in the Scottish Premiership title race, laughing off a question from BBC Scotland.

Jota has been in dynamite form at the start of the 2022/23 campaign, scoring goals, creating assists and generally terrorising defences across the country.

That was no different today with his sumptuous dink over Jon McLaughlin arguably the best of Celtic’s four goals in the derby.

After the match, he was asked about the win and what it meant in the context of a title race. A laughing Jota told BBC Scotland [19:50]: “No, come on, this is September. This is too early. Last season people kept on saying they were in front of us, and the championship was done.

“Things don’t work like that, this is football. It is game after game. Until May, there is plenty of football to play. So, just chill. We have plenty of stuff to do.”

It’s the perfect attitude, of course. This is exactly what we want to hear from the team and the manager. Nobody at Celtic should be getting complacent. And they won’t.

Ange Postecoglou has instilled that kind of attitude in the players from day one, and we aren’t going to start hearing them go off-script now.

Jota is obviously an eye-catching attacker but what makes him so effective for Celtic is how hard he works to make those moments happen. He is defensively robust, committed in tracking back and never simply a luxury.

This interview typifies that spirit.
