A flurry of current and former Celtic talents have been reacting to Luca Connell’s Parkhead departure after the midfielder announced his exit on social media.

Connell, who signed for Celtic back in 2019 under Neil Lennon, never managed to play a single competitive minute for the club despite arriving with a big reputation from Bolton.

But it appears he made plenty of friendships during his time in Glasgow regardless. As the midfielder reflected on his time at Celtic via Instagram, many of the current Parkhead youngsters as well as some former players reacted to the news

The likes of Dembele, Stephen Welsh, Mikey Johnston, Adam Montgomery, and Jonathan Afolabi gave their well wishes to the Republic of Ireland under-21 international. Former Parkhead talents Hayes, Jonjoe Kenny, Cameron Harper, and Liam Hughes did likewise.

Connell departs Celtic after back-to-back promotion successes during loan spells with Queen’s Park. And despite impressing for the newly-promoted Championship club, it’ll be interesting to see where he ends up next.

Scott Brown’s Fleetwood Town have already been linked with a move for the player [Scottish Sun].

Luca Connell never looked like staying at Celtic Park

It’s difficult to paint this departure as anything other than unsurprising and appropriate. In truth, Connell would likely have left a year ago as it became clear even then that he wasn’t going to be getting opportunities at the club.

The writing was on the wall for him after Ange Postecoglou arrived and still didn’t give him any real chances to impress. Instead, Connell was sent back out on loan to Queen’s Park, despite Ange giving a host of younger players senior outings this season.

Of course, Connell is now 21 years of age. He’s no longer 17 or 18. Regular first-team football is essential and it never looked like coming for the Hoops.

A move to the likes of Fleetwood would be a great landing for him considering how his career has gone over the last couple of years. To play under a character the likes of Brown would be a huge learning environment from him.

If he were to remain in Scotland, it really is up in the air as to whether he would land a Premiership move. He’ll feel he has the attributes to remain in the top division, but is that view shared by other clubs and managers?

Connell’s next move is absolutely massive in the context of his career. He needs to make sure it’s the right one. It’s a shame to see him go given the potential many believed he had. But it just wasn’t to be in the end.
