Celtic should be looking to seal Kristoffer Ajer on a new contract as soon as possible.

Rangers have bolstered their side by their signing of Nikola Katic on an extended deal last night. Both players have had a similar journey in Glasgow with it ending in them being starters.

However, the Hoops should be looking to replicate their bitter rivals’ decision by tying Ajer down to a new deal.

Celtic must be aiming for a new contract for Kristoffer Ajer

The 21-year-old arrived as a young captain from Norway in 2016 under Ronny Deila.

Kristoffer Ajer as a youngster at IK Start in Norway.

He was originally a midfielder that the club are in the process of moulding into a centre-back. Ajer is arguably the first name on the team sheet but it’s not always been plain sailing.

The youngster had a shaky start and was loaned out to Kilmarnock to get more experience.

Katic in a similar manner had rocky beginnings with Rangers with fans questioning Steven Gerrard’s trust in him. Now, he is becoming the first name on the team sheet for the Scottish Premiership leaders.

Gerrard has sewn his man up until 2023, while Celtic are still needing to get the paper signed by Ajer.

The Hoops need to be better prepared for the big guns to come in and try to take him on the cheap.

Norwegian needs deserved rest on Saturday

Despite being a top defender for the club, Ajer must sit out for the match on Saturday against Ross County. He has played a lot of football this season and some slackness has come into his game recently.

The Hoops should try and rest Ajer on the bench and take it from there.

Neil Lennon should try the likes of Hatem Abd Elhamed at centre-back for the time being. This will mean Mortiz Bauer continues in the right-back spot with no worries.

The Lazio game next Thursday will be massive and everyone will need to be sharp. By keeping Ajer out of Saturday’s game, he can put his mind at ease and be ready for a major test.
