Kenny Dalglish says Celtic could need as many as 6 more players this summer
Kenny Dalglish has stated his belief that Celtic could need as many as six new players this summer if certain players leave in the coming weeks.
Despite the new Premiership campaign beginning yesterday, the Celtic squad still has plenty of holes plaguing it.
There are personnel shortages at centre-back, right-back, left-wing, and centre-forward. You can also argue there is a massive quality shortage in the goalkeeping department also.
With speculation surrounding players such as Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie, Dalglish believes Celtic could need as many as six players in before the window closes.
Speaking via his Sunday Post column, Dalglish said: ‘Recruitment will be a massive part of it all, and there is still a need to bring in three or four players. In the next few weeks, it may be that they need to bring in five or six new faces if one or two current first-team players are sold.
“Postecoglou’s post-match comments last Wednesday night were interpreted as being a verbal volley towards the Celtic hierarchy. But Ange alone cannot fix all the issues and problems Celtic have at this moment.

“New chief executive, Dom McKay, also can’t do it all on his own. Likewise, the scouting department can’t be held solely accountable. They all need to pull together, and give their absolute maximum in addressing what needs to be fixed at Celtic Park. Doing this collectively will give them a much better chance of succeeding. It’s too big a job for one man to take all on his own shoulders.”
Kenny Dalglish not wrong; Celtic should’ve been in much better place by now
To say Celtic need five or six players isn’t wrong. In fact, it could even be more than that if we’re talking about solving both our depth and quality shortage.
It’s clear Celtic need a new goalkeeper to start off with. Not to mention two right-backs considering Anthony Ralston should never be near it. An upgrade on Greg Taylor and Boli Bolingoli is also required at left-back.
We have no left-wingers fit and available, with only Mikey Johnston naturally capable of playing in the position. Mohamed Elyounoussi has yet to be replaced.
Whilst Patryk Klimala has been replaced by Kyogo Furuhashi, a successor for Odsonne Edouard needs to be on the cards too. All of a sudden, that’s as many as six players assuming only one departs. If we lose further key personnel, there could be as many as seven or eight needed.
What makes it even more frustrating is that the Celtic board has known this would be the case since January. Potentially even last summer. To be into August with only three first-teamers in the door just isn’t on.
Dalglish is right in that everyone needs to work together. However, even if he may believe he’s going over the top in how many players we need, the truth is he’s likely undervaluing it.
