Celtic midfielder Kerr McInroy picked up an injury that forced him off against Motherwell on Monday.
The midfielder lasted just 15 minutes before needing treatment and being subbed off for Barry Coffey. The substitute performed well on the day, and Celtic ran out comfortable 3-1 winners.
But the immediate question marks after the game are on McInroy. With just one game to go in the reserve league campaign, the Celtic captain would be a huge loss. His composure and elegance in the midfield is exactly what the Hoops need to dictate against St Johnstone next Friday.
Speaking to Celtic TV after the Motherwell clash, Tommy McIntyre seemed more hopeful than expectant regarding his captain.
“He’s being assessed just now. Hopefully, he’ll be okay. I think it was more just a precaution than anything else. Nonetheless, Barry Coffey comes in. He’s one of the young ones – under-18s. He came in and he slotted in well.”
Next season feels like a big one for McInroy
It’s been a stunning season for the Celtic reserve’s midfield general this season. He’s featured consistently for the reserve side this season, and has also added some vital goals to his game.
McInroy also has a reputation for scoring stunners. Celtic posted a tremendous video of 10 McInroy goals in 60 seconds on YouTube. It’s a fantastic example of how much of a rifle his left foot is.
Next season, McInroy must be due his big chance. He’s yet to make an appearance in a Celtic first-team squad. That’s despite the fact he’s perhaps the most consistent performer at reserve level.
His progress has been noticed, however. Brendan Rodgers had him training with the first-team squad in the past. Added to that, he has fine international experience at youth level with Scotland under-17s and 19s respectively.
Hopefully, his injury isn’t a nasty one. He was one of the players who could easily have been looked at and given a brief shot before the end of the season. Of course, Celtic’s inability to wrap the title up early wouldn’t have helped his chances.
But next season, don’t be surprised if Kerr McInroy is a name you hear a lot more of.
