Kieran Tierney “expected” to make Arsenal debut

It could be a very big night for former Celtic hero Kieran Tierney. The 22-year-old could be in line to make his debut for new employers Arsenal when they take on Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup.

Tierney may have moved to the Gunners six weeks ago but he has spent the majority of his time training in isolation, trying to get up to speed with his new team mates.

And now it looks like the time may have come for him to make his first appearance. The Telegraph report that Tierney is expected to make his first senior start of the season, alongside Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding.

Arsenal traditionally use the cup competition to give returning and youth players a chance of first-team action so it may be the perfect opportunity for Tierney to impress.

How good can Tierney be for Arsenal?

It’s very difficult to picture just how good Tierney will be in North London. The obvious comparison people are making, due to nationality and position, is Andy Robertson.

The Liverpool defender has become one of the best full-backs in world football over the past 18 months so it would take an almighty effort for Tierney to reach those levels.

However, he does have all the attributes to be a success in the English top-flight. He’s going to a club who like to dominate possession so that should suit Tierney’s game. He’ll also be playing with and against a higher level of player than at Celtic and that can only help to improve his ability.

But as the Scotland international prepares to don an Arsenal shirt in a senior match for the first time, most Celtic fans may want to avoid any pictures. It still hurts a little too much.
