Kieran Tierney should not be risked for Glasgow derby

The Glasgow derby between Celtic and Rangers might be the biggest domestic game on the calendar – but that doesn’t mean you risk injured players back for it.

Kieran Tierney is currently in that situation. The Hoops left-back faces a battle to make the game, and he missed both of Scotland’s recent games.

No need to rush him back

There is no need for Neil Lennon to rush him back for the game. It is perhaps telling that a video appeared on Celtic’s YouTube channel featuring players training ahead of the derby.

Tierney was not featured in the video, whilst other injury doubts like Tom Rogic and Olivier Ntcham were.

That could prove to be an ominous sign for Tierney. If he isn’t training four days before a game, there has to be a doubt over his involvement in the game.

Long-term future more important

Tierney’s long-term future is more important than this one game. Neil Lennon will understand that. The likes of Emilio Izaguirre or Jonny Hayes are capable of replacing Tierney on the day.

It isn’t the ideal situation, but it is the best one for both the club and the player. It is more important to have Tierney fit for either the rest of this season, or the Champions League qualifiers at the start of next season.

If that means he misses the Glasgow derby then so be it.
