Kieran Tierney speaks out on poor Celtic season ahead of derby; picks his choice for new manager

Former Celtic hero Kieran Tierney has been speaking about the club’s difficult season ahead of today’s game with Rangers.

The Arsenal star is still a massive Celtic supporter and has been watching our games when he has the opportunity throughout the campaign.

Earlier in the season he even stated he’d been roping in his Gunners teammates to watch the action.

Sky Sports have now interviewed him on a variety of Celtic issues as part of their pre-Rangers build-up.

Asked why our season hasn’t gone according to plan this term, Tierney said: “I don’t think anyone could tell you to be honest. It’s been difficult, it’s been a hard season.

“That’s all it is, it’s just a hard season, that can happen. It happens to the best of teams – if you look all over Europe there are a few big teams struggling for form this season especially.

“It’s not something that’s gonna last forever, I hope next year they can bounce back to what it was and win titles.”

The Scotland international was then quizzed on John Kennedy’s potential as a Celtic manager.

If Tierney were still a player at Lennoxtown, he’s the man that he’d want to get the gig on a permanent basis.

He told Sky Sports: “He’s got his own ideas on how to play football. I worked with him for years under three different managers. I know how good he is.

“If I was a player I would be hoping he gets it to be honest. I know how good he can be with the players. I know how much he’s learned from different managers and the experience he’s got, so yeah, I think he would be brilliant.”

Kennedy unlikely to get Celtic job, but still has managerial potential

It’s clear from Tierney’s words that he rates Kennedy as a potential future Celtic manager. The interim boss likely knows better than anyone it’s not his moment though, regardless of how today’s derby or the Scottish Cup goes.

Tierney is showing loyalty to a figure who has been instrumental in his development and progress as a player.

I reckon Kennedy will now leave the club and become his own man elsewhere at another Scottish team. He needs to cut his cloth as a manager, prove his ability and then, if he fancies it, return to Celtic with the baggage of this season behind him.

Hopefully today’s match against Rangers can go a long way to proving Kennedy is a good head coach.
