Korean media say Suwon ‘feeling the void’ of Hyeongyu Oh’s Celtic transfer

The signing of Hyeongyu Oh as a replacement for Giorgos Giakoumakis was one that was met with mixed feelings amongst the Celtic fans.

We had a proven international striker in the Greek forward who had just finished the season as Celtic’s top goalscorer and seemed to be trading him in for a younger, unproven model in Oh who arrived at the club as a relatively unknown quantity.

And in a way, I can understand the way some fans were feeling.

With only Kyogo Furuhashi as our main striker, there was a worry over whether or not a 21-year-old could step up and do the business for a club like Celtic should anything happen to our star striker.

Since his arrival, Oh has put in some impressive performances and has scored three goals in twelve appearances so far this season.

The main thing that has impressed the fans is that he is not just a target man. Oh is mobile, strong and, as he has proven on international duty, has a keen eye for goal, albeit his strike was ruled offside.

But if there was ever any doubt at the quality the Korean international has and how important he can be for the team, Korean outlet Sports Khan highlights just how influential he was at his former club, “Suwon [Samsung Bluewings] are feeling the void left by front-line striker Oh Hyun-kyu (Celtic), who broke onto the European stage in the winter transfer window.

“In the offseason, they signed Bo-Kyung Kim, Acosti, Bassani and Mulich, but so far it hasn’t had much effect.”

Bluewings sit rooted to the bottom of the K League with only two points from six games with the loss of Oh being cited as one of the reasons for the drop in form.

Oh scored fourteen goals for the Koreans last season and it was the Celtic striker’s 120th minute goal in the relegation play-off final that saved Suwon from the dreaded drop.

The fact that Suwon have added four players to their ranks to boost their firepower since Oh left and they have scored just three goals between them, shows just how much they miss their former striker’s prowess in front of goal.

There is no doubt that there is a talent in Oh but with Kyogo Furuhashi in the form of his life at the moment, the youngster is going to have to bide his time on the sidelines for now.
