Kris Boyd holds his hands up to Celtic fans as he admits huge error of judgement

Celtic got away with a fortunate result against Hibs at Easter Road in midweek.

Brendan Rodgers had to rely on his loanee striker Adam Idah’s excellent penalty-taking ability to secure three points on the road when at one point, it looked like the team were set to go on and lose.

When Hibs equalised to make it 1-1 in the second-half, they were the side on top and really should have got their noses in front with the chances they had.

Celtic let them in too easily and were far too ineffective in building attacks at the other end, especially from the wide areas.

The result was a great one in the end as Celtic remain top of the Scottish Premiership. But the performance was all too familiar this season; ponderous and nervy.

Fans have directed their anger at the Board in recent weeks which has been fuelled by the very underwhelming January transfer window.

But mouthpiece pundit Kris Boyd, writing in his Scottish Sun column, thinks Rodgers needs to take a lot of the blame too. And that viewpoint has led the former Rangers striker to admit that he got his opinion of Rodgers’ return to Glasgow in the summer horribly wrong.

He has also questioned why the Northern Irishman decided to return in the first place after a report in June claimed he initially wasn’t interested in replacing Ange Postecoglou in the dugout [The Scottish Sun].

Boyd has said: “Celtic fans, I have a confession to make. Back in June, I stated Brendan Rodgers was an upgrade on the departing Ange Postecoglou.

“For the first time in a long time, I’ll hold my hands up and admit I called it wrong. I was expecting the 2016/17 version of Rodgers to return and take Celtic by storm again.

“Instead, the Parkhead punters are seeing a very different boss, as Wednesday’s woeful display against Hibs showed.

“Sure, Celtic won the game thanks to two penalties and it could end up being a vital three points. Yes, they remain top and could go on to beat an improving Rangers team to the title. But as I said on Sky Sports, the result was a robbery.

“And judging by the reaction, that Easter Road performance has only made Celtic fans more worried that Philippe Clement’s side are going to topple them. It’s clear something isn’t right at the club. There has been too much of a drop-off from last year’s Treble-winning team.

“They’re nine points and 21 goals worse off than they were after 25 Premiership games last season. But that doesn’t begin to tell the story of a season that has raised so many questions about Rodgers’ return.

“When Postecoglou first left for Tottenham, the Northern Irishman privately made it clear he wasn’t interested. What happened to convince him a second stint there was a good idea is anybody’s guess.

“Exactly what vision Dermot Desmond and the Celtic board sold him, I don’t know — but it surely wasn’t this.

“Watching Rodgers and Celtic this season has been like seeing a couple give a failed marriage one last go. It didn’t work out in the end the first time, and the second time is turning out to be a mistake.

“Win or lose the title, it seems inevitable the reunion won’t last long-term. He went for the full Ronny Roar at Easter Road on Wednesday and relief was etched all over his face.

“I’m struggling to remember seeing him like that during his long career as a boss. Rodgers knew how big a win that was for his team — and himself.”
