Rangers’ Champions League exit means that Celtic are Scotland’s sole representatives in the competition this season.
For the third year in a row, the Bhoys will face up to Europe’s elite clubs in the group stages after winning the league title each season since 2021/22.
With that, comes the millions of pounds of UEFA money that has poured into the Celtic Park coffers which has helped keep the club at the top of Scottish football not just for the last three years, but since the turn of the century.
So when Kris Boyd made this claim the day after Rangers got knocked out of the Champions League, it certainly raised my eyebrows.
Boyd: ‘Looks like’ Celtic will dominate Scottish football
Speaking about Rangers’ defeat to Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden last night, the former Rangers striker said it ‘looks like’ Celtic will dominate Scottish football for years now after making a strange claim about his former club.
Boyd said [Sky Sports], “Rangers aren’t in a good place.
“Rangers fans are used to watching them dominate Scottish football – right now it looks like Celtic will dominate for a long time.
“The word project has been used about Rangers. I can tell you Rangers as a football club has never been a project and never will be, they need to win.
“That’s where the pressure will build. People will want time but you aren’t going to get it.
“There’s negativity flying around, you’ve drawn your first league game, out of the Champions League. The last thing Rangers need is for this to fester and have a knock-on effect.”
So, who is going to tell him then? Every Celtic fan will know that since the turn of the century, Celtic have been Scotland’s most dominant club and the gap between the two clubs could be about to get bigger.
Celtic’s domination of Scottish football since 2000
Just looking at the club’s trophy history, Celtic have secured 18 league titles, 12 Scottish Cups and 10 League Cups.
Narrow that date back to 2012 and Celtic have been the Scottish champions in 11 out of those 12 years since. And I haven’t even mentioned the fact that a Quadruple Treble, a second nine-in-a-row and a record-breaking eighth domestic treble have been achieved in that time whilst Rangers have picked up just three major honours.
In fact, you need to go all the way back to the nineties to qualify any claim of domination in Scotland the Ibrox club has enjoyed.
Boyd needs to come to terms with one simple fact. Celtic have been dominant in Scotland for over 20 years.
But at least he could have one claim correct, the Bhoys do look like they could continue that domination for several years to come.
