Kris Boyd’s bitter penalty dig at Celtic player vs Motherwell

Celtic are miles ahead of Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership over the festive period thanks, in part, to a 4-0 win over Motherwell.

Brendan Rodgers’ side looks in good form heading into the Celtic Park clash with St Johnstone tomorrow afternoon where if the Hoops can pick up a win, they head to Ibrox to face Rangers with a minimum 12-point gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership table on the 2nd of January.

Celtic’s rout of Motherwell began after Hyunjun Yang was wiped out by the Motherwell goalkeeper and the match officials, quite rightly, awarded a penalty.

But it seems it was that penalty award that really annoyed Kris Boyd as he took to his weekly podcast to take a childish snipe at the Celtic winger.

Yang nicked in ahead of the Motherwell ‘keeper after Paulo Bernardo delivered an inch-perfect cross towards his Celtic teammate.

The match referee and VAR both concluded, rightly, that the spot kick was the correct call and Arne Engels converted to begin Celtic’s thrashing of the Fir Park club.

But it seems that Boyd has taken exception with Yang’s reaction to the challenge.

Boyd told Go Ballistic, “Yeah, well, you know, it was a penalty to Celtic as well. There will be many people moaning about that. I just hope Yang’s okay.

“Looked a real sore one. Looked a real sore one. I hope he’s okay.”

The insinuation that the penalty was the wrong call won’t be lost on many Celtic fans but it was Boyd’s cheap dig at Yang that needs to be called out.

Regardless of whether Yang made a meal of the challenge or not, Celtic’s Unique Angle of the foul shows that there was clear contact on the Hoops winger.

Whether there was enough force in the challenge to merit the reaction that Yang delivered only the South Korean will be able to verify.

With this type of reaction happening throughout the game, it seems that Boyd only has an issue with it when it involves Celtic because it is rare if there is any occasion, where the former Rangers striker calls out players of other clubs, including his own.

Boyd should focus on at least trying to remain impartial or, at the very least, call out every instance where he feels a player has made a meal of a challenge instead of making cheap digs involving Celtic’s player.
